GCRE ...
Racial Attacks Monitoring UnitWe
are pleased to report, that the Abbey Wood Project set up in conjunction with
the Council’s CHART project, is doing very well. Our trained volunteers are
still at hand to help out in difficult situations in that area. Their local
knowledge has enhanced our networking in the area, and we have been able to
reach a large number of race hate crime victims who needed support but did not
know where to seek help. GCRE (RAMU) wish to thank these people for their
selflessness and commitment to promote racial harmony and equality. Several
activities have been planned to sustain the anti-racist momentum in Eltham. University
of Greenwich
It
would appear that this University is fast becoming a fertile breeding ground for
fascists as it is known that a far right activist is in the University as a
student. The obvious repercussions of their activities will inevitably and as
usual, fall on the local Black and Minority Ethnic communities in Greenwich and
neighbouring boroughs. RAMU
has alerted the University of the dangers these racist elements pose to our
community but they have not heeded our caution. This is despite the fact that
two of the University’s own Lecturers have been threatened and targeted for
attack. RAMU’s position on this issue is clear. We
are planning a very focussed campaign on this matter and hope to sustain it
until the University re-examines its policies and adopts better anti-racist
practice. Resources:
(24 hour Emergency Help Line)
This valuable service is run by GCRE but is under-funded. This under-funding does not take account of another crucial factor that other Councils and agencies have since addressed.GCRE/RAMU’s funding is based or calculated on the Black & Minority Ethnic population in Greenwich which was 12% approx. at the time. The last census however revealed that the local BME population is 23%. In other words, we are being asked to cater for 23% with real funding for only 12%. The
following are key areas that needs urgent attention in order to improve RAMU’s
Help Line Service. During the year RAMU responded to 198 calls. Resources are
desperately needed to: •
Set up a Free Phone Line •
Pay adequate remuneration for staff who man the 24hr service. •
Cover Volunteer’s expenses and training •
Pay for related running costs •
Acquire necessary equipment (extra mobile phones for Volunteers, computers for
database purposes etc) •
Publicity (leaflets, posters and general information dissemination) The
above list is by no means exhaustive and is open to discussion with assessors
and
Policy & Implementation
This
is something RAMU wants to remedy desperately.
Collation of information is also very poor on our partner’s side. We do not
receive our RH1/Monitoring forms for monitoring purposes with consistency. There
is therefore no parity in the figures between the Council, police and RAMU. This
is a situation we have been trying to remedy over the years. We aim to achieve
statistical uniformity in figures. This will enable everyone involved to be able
to make meaning of the
